Profile
Weekly Sunday practices are ongoing from 10 am to 11:30 am. Green Tara and White Tara meditations are usually conducted for healing, longevity, overcoming obstructions, etc. Additionally, Guru Padmasambhava Tsok, Lama Chopa (Guru Yoga), Riwo Sangchod, Medicine Buddha rituals, and other prayers are performed, depending on the phase of the moon in the lunar calendar and the needs of the community. The temple is a remote sanctuary located in a secluded part of the Big Island, and is uniquely suited for contemplation & meditation. Nechung Rinpoche established the temple in 1973 and is its head lama. Rinpoche’s lineage can be traced back to Guru Padmasambhava and the early dissemination of Buddhism in 8th century Tibet – he is recognized as one of the Guru’s 25 main disciples. After Rinpoche passed away in 1983, following the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a search party of 3 persons, including a monk from Nechung Monastery in India and the 2 managers of the Nechung Temple in Hawai’i, went to find the reincarnation in Tibet in 1987 and 1993, They were successful in their search & escorted the 8-year old boy out of Chinese communist-occupied Tibet safely to India. There, the young lama received his spiritual training at Nechung & Mindroling monastic institutions. The incredible story of the search, discovery, and escape of Nechung Rinpoche’s reincarnation is documented in “Road to Freedom: A Journey from Occupied Tibet.” http://www.journeyfromoccupiedtibet
