Profile
Zen Community of Oregon is a Zen Buddhist community in the White Plum lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi (1931-1995). Maezumi Roshi’s life vow was to plant the Dharma deeply in the soil of North America.
ZCO is led by teachers Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi, and Hogen Bays, Roshi. The primary purpose of Zen Community of Oregon is to express and make accessible the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha’s teachings as transmitted through an authentic, historical lineage, and to support and maintain Zen Buddhist practice, in order to realize and actualize our Buddha nature in everyday life.
ZCO has two main practice centers. Great Vow Zen Monastery is a full-time residential practice community located in Clatskanie, OR, an hour north of Portland. Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple is an urban practice center in northeast Portland.
The style of practice in ZCO embraces a wide range of influences, while remaining rooted in Soto Zen.
