Heart Circle Sangha fosters the practice and study of Buddhism in the Soto Zen tradition through meditation, study, services, retreats and workshops.
We are committed to serving our communities and the world. Our purpose is to awaken the spirit of living in the present moment and appreciating our life just as it is. Through meditation and study, we develop our understanding of ourself as the One Body of the Universe and relinquish our false sense of self.
What We Offer
Offerings include beginning meditation instruction, interviews, mindfulness, precepts and koan study, council practice, the practice of immediacy, jukai for those completing precepts study, priest training and ordination. Weekend and week-long retreats are scheduled throughout the year.
About Joan Hogetsu Roshi
Teacher Rev. Joan Hogetsu Hoeberichts, Roshi, is a Zen Buddhist priest, a Zen teacher and Spiritual Director of Heart Circle Sangha in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She is a dharma successor of Roshi Nicolee Jikyo McMahon and a member of the White Plum Asangha, consisting of Zen teachers in the lineage of Maezumi Roshi, founder of the Zen Center of Los Angeles. Joan received the 2008 Woman and Engaged Buddhism Award and was named an Outstanding Woman of Buddhism in 2009 for her multi-year project in Sri Lanka following the 2004 tsunami. There, she worked with a team of therapists to teach Sri Lankan counselors to treat trauma survivors. She also works as a psychotherapist in private practice.
