The Chapel Hill Zen Group came into existence in 1981. It was formed by a small group of friends who took turns meditating in each other's homes in the Durham-Chapel Hill area in North Carolina. In 1991 Pat Phelan left the San Francisco Zen Center to lead the Group. The Chapel Hill Zen Center now has a permanent meeting place at 5322 NC Highway 86, Chapel Hill, 27514 (2.5 miles north of I-40 Exit 266). All meetings are open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. The building has wheelchair access.
A Children's Program meets twice a month on Sunday mornings, except during the summer. A Recovery Group with a Buddhist Perspective meets Tuesday nights at 7:00pm and a People of Color Sitting Group meets on Wednesday nights at 6:00pm. Zen meditation instruction and orientation are given on Tuesday evenings at 7:00, and Sunday mornings at 9:00. There are two periods of zazen and a service at 6:00 AM Monday through Friday, on Sunday mornings at 9:00am, and on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm. There is one period of zazen on Thursday evenings at 6:00pm, often followed by a Study Group from 6:45-8:00pm. One 5-day and one 7-day Sesshin, as well as several All-day Sittings are held each year. Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes. Pants, or skirts that come below the knee, are appropriate.
